Shanghai Major 2016 Main Event Day 3 Round-Up

Today was the day 3 of Dota 2 Shanghai Major 2016 Main Event. And compared to the last few days of unrest and chaos, Day 3 seemed quite smooth and action-packed with tons of great gameplay by all teams involved. All matches can be viewed through Twitch.tv, Steam Broadcast and YouTube Live.

THE UPPER BRACKET SEMIFINALS

We witnessed two series in the round 2 of the upper bracket. Evil Geniuses vs Team Secret, and Team Liquid vs MVP Phoenix.

Evil Geniuses vs Team Secret

Both of these teams are top tier and packed with fan favourite players. Both teams played exceptionally, unfortunately for Evil Geniuses they had to take a step down.

Game 1 – Puppey picked Enigma for himself, and let EternalEnvY keep the Spectre. Focusing on a more farming and late game teamfight build, Secret was able to take down Evil Geniuses by outsmarting them in teamfights. SumaiL and Arteezy tried their best but did not have enough space in the map to really accomplish anything.

Game 2 – By having a Lycan, Death Prophet and Enigma all in the same team, Evil Geniuses attempted a pushing hero line-up. But not only were the successful in pushing, their top teamfights helped to take down the defences of Team Secret.

Game 3 – Evil Geniuses attempted a 4 protect 1 playstyle, with Arteezy on the Sven again. w33  played an exceptional invoker on Team Secret and led them to a clean victory.

Team Liquid vs MVP Phoenix

Game 1 – MVP Phoenix picked a very farm heavy line up, but weren’t able to pick up the momentum from midgame and eventually fell off in terms of teamfighting and farming. FATA’s Invoker undoubtedly snowballed the team to victory.

Game 2 – A few early game mistakes and over extensions from MVP Phoenix lead them to not dominating in teamfights later, and they lost once again.

THE LOWER BRACKET ROUND 3

Similarly, amazing matches were played in the Bo3 series in the round 3 of the lower bracket. It was Team OG up against Fnatic, and Alliance vs compLexity Gaming.

Alliance vs compLexity Gaming

Game 1 – Alliance got an early advantage in number of kills as the Slark hunted all of coL’s heroes down. The Enigma on coL didn’t get much space to pull off black holes as it kept getting interrupted by Alliance. coL tried to fight back in the mid-game but once again were bested by Alliance’s teamfighting abilites.

Game 2 – The game was quite even in the first 30 minutes, but eventually compLexity broke the base and plowed through Alliance.

Game 3 – Chessie played an amazing Ember Spirit, and got enough momentum to secure kills almost every team fight. The match was mostly even, but the downfall of Alliance was the low mobility on S4’s Brewmaster, which got caught out too many times in the midlane and due to this he couldn’t amount to anything. Alliance was eliminated from the Shanghai Major.

OG vs Fnatic

Game 1 – Fnatic played safe by picking Medusa for Mushi. OG didn’t want Fnatic to have enough space to get Medusa farming and started over-extending, leading them to losing heroes left and right. Fnatic’s Enigma was mostly countered by OG’s Silencer. After an intense 41 minute match, OG was forced to call gg.
Winner: Fnatic

Game 2 – Fnatic undoubtedly played a great game. Their Ravage, Dreamcoil and Chain Frost combinations hit OG in places they didn’t expect. Fortunately OG they defended their base for a long time and ended up over-taking Fnatic in teamfights in the super late game and won the match at 67 minutes; making this match the longest of Day 3.

Game 3 – OG heroes were taken down by Fnatic left and right throughout the game, as if they’d turned off their mercy switch. The match uneventfully concluded at 29 minutes with a score of 28-4; eliminating OG from the Shanghai Major.
