Fortune has just released their Top 100 employers to work for in 2016 list. As always, there were quite a few familiar names from previous years including Google. But for now, let’s shift our focus towards two of the companies on the list that also are considerable stakeholders in the Esports sector, Activision Blizzard and Riot Games.
Riot Games was founded in 2006, and it’s headquarters is situated in Los Angeles, California. It is the development team behind League of Legends, undoubtedly one of, if not, the biggest eSports sensation throughout the world right now. The company was listed on fortune.com’s Top 100 Employers list of 2016 at number 39. One of the main reasons for Riot to have a special place in this list is that since it is a gaming company, the environment is quite laid back. Some perks include having unlimited days off, so “Rioters can make their own schedule”. According to a review, 97% of employees claim that Riot Games is a fun place to work.
Employees are given free beverages, food, and even massage therapy during work hours. They can also enroll in fitness classes. Rioters have great health benefits and insurance options at the workplace. New hires are subject to change their mind about employment with Riot Games after 60 days are over, and if they don’t see fit to work there they are offered 10% of their annual salary as an incentive to quit.
Activision Blizzard was found in 1979, and it’s headquarters is located at Santa Monica, California. Activision Blizzard has created many competitive games ever since it’s inception, two big names that come to mind immediately are World of Warcraft and the Call of Duty franchise. Activision Blizzard ranked 79 on fortune.com’s Top 100 Employers list of 2016. Similar to Riot Games, employees that work here are encouraged to let their inner geek out and show their love for video games. Every time a Call of Duty game is released, workers dress up in costumes and have an epic water squirt gun competition.
In addition to that, Activision Blizzard has encouraged women in a male-dominated scene, and provided a networking group where females can share their experiences and favourite games. Similar to Riot Games, employees are given free food and beverages, massage therapy and fitness classes at their workplace. They also have decent healthcare programs for employees.
It’s a proud moment for the world of eSports to witness gaming companies being located up there in top worldwide lists. This only goes to show how much the gaming industry has come in the past years and how much more potential it has to grow and become an important aspect of media.
